Spring, a time of renewal

March 17, 2015

Wow, spring has really been knocking hard at our door lately.  March came in like a lamb this year.  Now, if we can just keep away the lions roar.

I have really enjoyed spending time in the light and warmth of the sunshine.  This light and warmth has begun to bring new life and color to our world; early spring flowers are busting through the ground, trees are showing a hint of light green, pinks, and whites, and a few lawns are showing signs of life.  As I am out and about town, I notice more people walking and working in yards, farmers working in fields, and grills being fired up from hibernation.

I love living in Kansas.  In this part of the world, we get to experience all the seasons of the year. I am not particularly fond of winter, but I have learned to accept it as necessary to fully experience and appreciate all spring has to offer.  Likewise, I am reminded that God is always with me and working within my heart, soul, and mind.  Soon will be the opportunity, like spring, to see the new life and color in my life; to walk as the light and warmth and rejoice with others the new life God has to offer all of us.

In about three weeks we will celebrate Easter, the oldest and most important of part of our Christian faith, the resurrection of our savior Jesus Christ.  Most everyone is familiar with, and has put to memory, the words of the gospel of John 3:16;

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”

and the words of John 14:6;

 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”

We have been discussing, Faith… Fearless…, for the past couple weeks.  “Faith” in Jesus Christ that is “Fearless” enough live out daily what we believe.  To realize worshiping our God is the lifestyle we live which shines the light and warmth of God’s love to all of creation.  Through us, others can begin to experience their own renewal of life, burst forth in color, and bear fruit for even more to see;

                                               “Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”

As we watch our world physically transform this spring, I encourage you to use this miracle to renew or begin your spiritual journey by committing to a lifestyle of worship.  It is time to allow yourself to be all God wants for you.  We would like for your family to come meet ours at the Sublette United Methodist Church.  Many events are coming up in the life of our church and we welcome you to be part of all of it.

May God’s peace be with all of you.

Palm Sunday, March 29

This service represents the sharp contrast of events during Holy Week.  Through entrance with Palms, we experience the joyous demonstration of the loyalty to Jesus as he enters Jerusalem. As the service continues, we are confronted by the story of Jesus’ passion.

Holy (Maundy) Thursday, April 2nd, 6:30pm

This evening we will share a meal together commemorating the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples before his crucifixion.  The service will include the sacrament of The Lord’s Supper and the servitude action of foot washing.

Good Friday, April 3rd, “A Service of Tenebrae”, 7:00 pm

The service of Tenebrae or “Darkness” is an extended refection on the passion of Christ.  Fourteen candles and The Christ candle are extinguished as reading take us from the Garden to the burial of Christ.  The decorations and Paraments are also removed during this service and the church remains in darkness until the Easter Service.

Easter Sunday, April 5th, Sunrise 6:45am and 10:30

The day begins with a Service of light at 6:45 am.  The light is brought into the church to light the Paschal Candle and the church is decorated in celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Breakfast will be served at the church 9am to 10am.  The traditional Easter Service, with reaffirmation of faith, will begin at 10:30 am.

All Lent and Easter service listed are open to everyone.  You are encouraged and invited to participate in any or all listed events regardless of church membership.  If you are seeking something more in your life, we would love to have you join us.  If you are seeking Baptism this Easter, please contact Pastor Eddie Pennington, 675-2203 or 675-8130.

April 12th, 2015, Camp Lakeside Sunday

This Sunday we will have Andie Strong with us from Camp Lakeside.  Camp Lakeside is a beautiful, peaceful, sacred space where children and adults alike can come to renew their faith through nature and learn about the surrounding area.  Camp Lakeside has been in service to western Kansas and affiliated with the United Methodist Church for over 65 years and is open and welcome to everyone.  Come prepared to experience something maybe just a little different this Sunday.

May 26th to May 29th, Vacation Bible School

The week following Memorial day, Sublette United Methodist Church will host Vacation Bible School.  Our curriculum will be, “Home Town Nazareth, Where Jesus was a kid.”  Bible School will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday through Friday evening.  A program will be held on Friday evening.  Many volunteer positions are available and the program is open to all children 1st grade to 5th grads.  Any 6th grade student may volunteer to help with the program under adult supervision but must attend a pre-program training session.
